There is something quite lovely about arriving somewhere on a Sunday afternoon.
The weekend crowds are beginning to disappear, the roads are quieter and West Lulworth starts to settle back into its normal pace.
For us, that makes a Sunday night at Honeysuckle Cottage one of those little breaks that can feel much longer than it actually is.
You arrive, unpack, go for a walk, have dinner somewhere nearby and wake up on Monday morning with the Jurassic Coast almost to yourself.
Then you go home.
No annual leave required.
Start your Sunday by the sea
If you can get away early enough, there is no reason to spend your Sunday afternoon sitting at home waiting for Monday.
Park up at Honeysuckle Cottage and head down towards Lulworth Cove.
It’s around a 10-minute walk from the cottage, so you can leave the car where it is and start your break on foot.
You could simply wander around the Cove, sit by the water with a coffee or carry on along the South West Coast Path for a longer walk.
And because you’re staying overnight, there’s no need to watch the clock and think about the drive home.
That’s the whole point.
Go for a proper Sunday walk
One of our favourite things about West Lulworth is that you don’t need to plan an elaborate itinerary.
Put your walking boots on and head towards the coast.
The walk from Lulworth Cove towards Durdle Door is the obvious choice if you have a few hours. It’s a beautiful stretch of the Jurassic Coast, although there are some steep sections, so it’s worth taking your time.
Or keep it simple and explore closer to the village.
A Sunday afternoon walk followed by a hot shower is a surprisingly effective way of resetting after a busy week.
Then stay for Sunday supper
This is where the one-night stay starts to feel different from a day trip.
You don’t have to get back in the car.
There are pubs and places to eat in and around West Lulworth, so you can have a proper Sunday evening without worrying about driving home afterwards.
And if you’d rather stay in, Honeysuckle Cottage has a fully equipped kitchen, so you can pick up something delicious locally and make a relaxed supper back at the cottage.
Then there’s nowhere else to be.
A quiet evening at Honeysuckle Cottage
One of the things we love about the cottage is that it doesn’t feel like somewhere you simply come back to after a day out.
It’s somewhere you can actually spend the evening.
Make a coffee or a cup of Dorset tea, put your feet up and settle into the living room.
The natural stone floors have underfloor heating, there’s an electric log-effect fire and the cottage has a separate snug if one of you wants to read while the other watches something on the Smart TV.
For a one-night stay, those little things matter.
You don’t need to go out again.
Monday morning is the secret
This is probably the best reason to stay on Sunday.
Instead of waking up at home and immediately thinking about work, commuting and everything that needs doing, you wake up in West Lulworth.
Make a coffee.
Have breakfast.
Take one last walk down towards Lulworth Cove if you have time.
On a Monday morning, the coast can feel completely different from a busy summer afternoon.
And then you head home.
You haven’t taken a week off. You haven’t even needed a full weekend.
But you’ve had a change of scenery, a proper walk, a good meal and a night somewhere beautiful.
Sometimes that’s enough.
Why stay for one night?
We’re not suggesting that one night is better than three or four.
If you have the time, we’d always encourage you to stay longer and explore more of the Jurassic Coast.
But sometimes you don’t have the time.
You might have a busy weekend planned, a Monday morning meeting or simply want to get away without committing to a longer break.
That’s where a Sunday night works particularly well.
It’s a small escape rather than a big holiday.
And because Honeysuckle Cottage is in the village itself, you can make the most of that short amount of time without spending half of it travelling.
