There is a secret that the summer crowds don’t know about the Jurassic Coast.
When the bright beach towels disappear from Lulworth Cove and the summer crowds fade away, West Lulworth changes completely.
The cliffs around Durdle Door become quieter. The sea takes on a wilder energy. The air is crisp and fresh, and the village settles into a slower, more peaceful rhythm.
Winter on the Dorset coast isn’t about hiding indoors and waiting for better weather. It’s about pulling on your walking boots, getting out into the landscape and then coming back to somewhere warm and cosy afterwards.
And that’s one of the reasons we love West Lulworth outside the summer months.
A quieter Jurassic Coast
Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door are spectacular at any time of year, but there is something rather special about seeing them when the crowds have gone.
You can walk along the South West Coast Path without the feeling that you’re following a procession of other visitors. There is more space to stop and take in the views, listen to the sea and simply enjoy being outside.
Of course, Dorset weather in winter can be unpredictable. You might get bright blue skies, driving rain, or all four seasons in one walk.
That’s part of the fun.
The important thing is to bring sensible footwear, a waterproof jacket and a willingness to embrace the weather.
Walk the coast
One of the best things about staying in West Lulworth is how easily you can get out onto the coast.
Lulworth Cove is around a 10-minute walk from Honeysuckle Cottage, so you don’t necessarily need to get in the car to start exploring.
From the Cove, you can follow the coast towards Durdle Door, with some spectacular views along the way. It’s a beautiful walk, although there are some steep sections, so it’s worth allowing plenty of time and checking the conditions before setting off.
And if the weather isn’t on your side, there are plenty of shorter walks around the village and surrounding countryside too.
Sometimes a brisk hour outside is all you need.
Warm up at the Saltwater Sauna
One of our favourite things about the quieter months is having somewhere to go afterwards and warm up.
The Saltwater Sauna at Lulworth Cove is a wood-fired coastal sauna just a short walk from the cottage.
You can spend some time in the heat, step outside into the sea air and, if you’re feeling brave, take a dip in the sea before warming up again.
It feels particularly appropriate in winter.
It’s not a spa day and it isn’t trying to be one. It’s a wood-fired sauna, the sea, the cliffs and an hour to slow down.
Then come back to Honeysuckle
After a few hours outside, one of the nicest things about winter is having nowhere else you need to be.
Come back to Honeysuckle Cottage, put the kettle on and get warm.
The cottage has underfloor heating beneath the natural stone floors, a cosy electric log-effect fire and a comfortable living space that’s made for slowing down after a day outside.
Make a coffee with the Nespresso, open a bottle of something nice and watch the weather change outside.
You don’t have to fill every hour of a winter break.
Winter evenings in West Lulworth
As the light fades, you can head out for dinner at one of the local pubs or restaurants before returning to the cottage.
Or stay in and make the most of the kitchen.
Winter evenings are one of the reasons we think Honeysuckle works so well for two. There is no pressure to go anywhere. You can spend the evening reading, watching a film, playing a game or simply enjoying the cottage.
The village feels very different after dark in winter too.
Quieter. Slower. Much more peaceful.
There’s plenty to do beyond the coast
A winter stay doesn’t have to mean walking every day.
You can visit Lulworth Castle, explore some of Dorset’s other attractions, find a good pub for lunch or simply take a drive through the countryside.
And if you haven’t visited Monkey World before, it’s another excellent option for a day out.
We have a particular soft spot for Monkey World ourselves, which is why we’ve recently adopted a monkey there.

Why we think winter is worth considering
Summer on the Jurassic Coast is wonderful.
But it isn’t the only time to come.
If what you’re looking for is sunshine, swimming and long days on the beach, then summer is probably the right choice.
If you’d rather have quieter walks, dramatic skies, cosy evenings and the freedom to explore without the summer crowds, winter has a lot going for it.
And you don’t have to wait for perfect weather.
Sometimes the best days are the ones where you come back from a walk slightly windswept, put the heating on and realise you have absolutely nowhere else you need to be.
